An Incremental Approach to Steep Turns

Here’s a short video that I made for AOPA Flight Training to explain a technique that helps pilots learn about and master steep turns.

As I explain in “Why is as Important as How,” an article in the January/February 2023 issue of AOPA Flight Training magazine, it’s important to distinguish the purpose of learning a maneuver from the standard by which the task is evaluated. In other words, don’t learn a rote procedure that produces a specified result (a level, 360-degree turn with a bank of 45 or 50 degrees). Instead, practice a task to understand what it can teach you about flying and learn how you can apply those skills to a variety of situations.
